1988 Twenty Thousand Came To Town
Oakledge Park 1988
The success of the 1987 Vermont Reggae Festival made the statement to
the entire region that a peace-loving, fun, and inspiring gathering was
taking place in Burlington Vermont and that it would be an annual event.
1988 proved that statement to be correct. An estimated crowd of over 20
thousand people in Oakledge park officially broke the record for any
public gathering in Burlington up to that time.
Held Saturday July 30 1988.
Although the stage should have been elevated higher, nothing hindered
the appreciative crowd from the enjoyment that the stage provided.
The 1988 Vermont Reggae Festival was a huge success and the
expectations and talk about the festival was spreading like wild-fire all
over the nation. By now the Vermont Reggae Festival is a bona-fied, plan
ahead for event.
Local , Regional,
National, and
International Artist
Reggae, Worldbeat, Ska, and Afro-
Pop acts from around the nation
and the world was beginning to
hear about the vibe of the Vermont
Reggae Festival and were either
inquiring, or being invited to
perform.
The Ambassadors
Every festival has to have an
official ambassador. What Michael
Lang, Max Yasgur, and Ritchie
Havens was to Woodstock, and
Perry Farrell was to Lollapalooza,
so was the Reggae band
Lambsbread to the Vermont
Reggae Festival, With band leader
Bobby Hackney being the founder
of the festival, and the popularity
of Lambsbread throughout
America help spread the word
about the festival on every tour
stop the band made.
A True Social
Gathering
This is 1988. Seven years before
the first computer operating
system became available to the
public. No cell phones, no social
media, just true human socializing
in a crowd of thousands promoting
an atmosphere of peace and love.
